An epic teenage fantasy with a gripping plot and believable, down to earth characters. Perfect for fans of teen fiction and fantasy fiction alike. In this, the first exciting installment of the Nature Mage series

Gaspi is an ordinary boy, living in the mountain village of Aemon's Reach, but life, for Gaspi, is forever changed the day magic erupts in him. He discovers he has a powerful gift - he is a Nature Mage, able to control natural forces and creatures and bend them to his will. It is a rare gift, and no-one has been born with it in centuries, but Gaspi's powers also have a dark side, and without training they will kill him. He is forced to leave his home and travel to the distant city of Helioport, where the Archmages of the College of Collective Magicks will teach him how to use his powers.

Accompanied by his guardian and his best friends, Gaspi sets off on the long journey to Helioport. The journey is fraught with danger, and Gaspi and his friends discover that there are demonic creatures abroad, intent on finding and killing anyone with magical ability. As Gaspi begins his magical studies, a shadow hangs over him and over the city of magicians. Gaspi's story of a demonic attack is not an isolated incident. As these stories multiply, Hephistole, the Chancellor of the college, is growing increasingly certain that someone or something is directing the demonic forces, but who, and to what end? As things unfold, Gaspi finds himself in the middle of dark and terrible times, and can only hope that his powerful gift will develop in time to make a difference when the time comes.

Nature Mage The Nature Mage Series Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Duncan Pile Harry Benjamin Books

I really enjoyed this book and was very happy to not find things in it that ruin other books for me.

The world was fairly realistic (if one can say that about a boy wizard's world) in that there were no fairies, dwarves, goblins, etc. I am, personally, tired of cutesy creatures that have cutesy names whether it's Star Wars (Jar Jar) or Harry Potter (half the cast). I really enjoyed the descriptions of the environment and the characters and really felt like I was in the moment, so to speak. I also enjoyed that there was some ethnic and cultural variety in the cast of characters though I think it could use a little more (maybe that's just me though-I like variety).

Also, the protagonist was not built up as this once in a millennium powerful being destined to save the world who, in the end, gets his butt kicked. Let's face it, Luke did not beat the Emperor (his dad did) and Harry did not beat Voldemort (the Elder Wand did). That always bothers me. In so many stories the main character is heralded as the savior but in the end fails and is saved by, basically, deus ex machina. Not so here, though I will add that he doesn't just run roughshod over the bad guys by any means. The final battle is well done but leaves the main villain for further books.

Flaws? Hmm. Sometimes an overly florid writing style (lots of similes). And then there's something I can't quite define-while reading the book I got a sense of an author still finding his footing. I can't really describe it though I wish I could.

I'll basically wrap it up to say that I think this book is a great read for anyone who likes the "young person finds out he/she has great power and is destined to save the world" genre. Honestly, I'd have given it 4 or 4.5 stars and saved the 5 stars for the sequel (which I suspect will deserve it as the author's style matures). But since the second book isn't out yet, I want to encourage him to finish it-so 5 stars it is. :)

Nature Mage The Nature Mage Series Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Duncan Pile Harry Benjamin Books Reviews

This first-in-a-series book leaves the reader anxious to find the next installment. Duncan Pile knows how to capture the reader's attention, and more importantly, his IMAGINATION. I couldn't put it down. Bring on Book 2!
Looking at the childlike cover, I was initially wary of this book, but it turned out to be quite the magical adventure story. Gaspi, who has recently discovered he's a nature mage, which means powerful magic, has to leave home to go the College of Magicks. There he learns about his magic, confronts scary monsters but also the evil within others (even himself), he learns how to deal with feelings of jealousy, envy, and anger while trying not to misuse his new found and compelling ability
A very very good teen fantasy thriller with plenty of coming of age parts. This is the kind of book you take under the covers and keep reading into the wee hours of the morning. I am not going into detail about the adventure awaiting you. Just get a copy already!
This was a great book ! Very well written. Great Author ! I would recommend this complete set of these books ! Yes !!!!!
This was a fun, sometimes role your eyes story. It is written for younger teens; although, being a bit older than that I still enjoyed the light, quick read. I think I will continue reading the next in the trilogy. I think of it as brain candy ;-).
This book is alive with the magic of the authors imagination. The characters are so believable and the plot carries you away like the best adventure story that it is.
I look forward to the remaining tales in this epic.
Aw! I was reading along, enjoying myself, & got tossed from the book! Went back to look, &, yep, it was over! Wonderful tale about 3 young mages coming into their powers & learning to control them. A friend & a guardian find a new purpose in life. Along the way, they find friends, enemies, & have to battle tremendous evil.
